Fairhaven Young People's Unit - Specialist Services

Who we are
Fairhaven Young People's Unit is a short-stay mental health inpatient facility in Warrington for young people.

It has been specially designed to meet the needs of teenagers, with bright, airy en-suite bedrooms and colourful décor. The unit features chill-out rooms, activity rooms and outdoor space and provides a safe, welcoming environment for young people to recover from mental ill-health.

Who is our service for?
Fairhaven Young People's Unit is here for young people age 14 to 18 with mental health needs that would be best met by secondary inpatient services. It's mainly for people living across Halton, Knowsley, St Helens, Warrington and Wigan but we also accept referrals for young people living outside these areas if needed.

How to access our service
As Fairhaven is a specialist mental health service, you can't self-refer to the unit. Referrals need to be made by a professional such as your GP, school nurse or a social worker. If you are concerned about the mental health of yourself or of a young person you know, make an urgent appointment to see your GP.

All referrals will need to be sent to our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Assessment and Response Team, which is a 24-hour service that handles all referrals to our CAMHS community and inpatient services. They will be able to make a referral for you to Fairhaven through specialist service commissioners NHS England if you do need specialist inpatient support.

What will happen when you first come to Fairhaven?
When you first come to Fairhaven, you will be shown around the unit by a member of our team.

They will then show you to your en-suite bedroom, where you can leave your personal belongings while you are staying on the unit.

You can add your own photos and other personal decorations to the room to make it feel as much like home as possible. You will also be encouraged to look after your personal space by keeping your room tidy.

Who do we work in partnership with?
We work in partnership with our CAMHS community services to manage discharge from our unit into community mental health services, as well as with adults' mental health services to manage the transition from child and adolescent services into adults' services if required.

We also work in partnership with Warrington Council to provide education for our service users in line with the national curriculum and we have a dedicated teacher on the unit who delivers lessons for our young people from Monday to Friday.
