Our future

Find out the latest information about the future of our organisation.

Since September 2017, our Trust Board and Council of Governors have been discussing the long term future direction and sustainability of the organisation, with recognition that, in coming years, growing financial challenges are likely to put the quality and safety of patient care at risk; which is something we will not allow to happen.
Our financial position is currently stable and patient care is being delivered safely, but in order to prevent any potential impact on quality of patient care in the future, we are doing the sensible thing and taking action now.
Transfer of Cheshire and Merseyside staff and services to Mersey Care
Having explored our options, in November 2019, our Trust Board and Council of Governors recommended to our regulator NHS Improvement that being acquired by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust would best support us to continue delivering high quality and safe care to our communities in the long term future.
This means the community and mental health services we deliver in Cheshire and Merseyside and the staff who deliver them will transfer to Mersey Care.
We believe this will be positive for patients, service users and staff across both trusts.
Together with Mersey Care, we are following a formal process to work out the details of this and aim to be able to transfer services and staff in 2021.
Transfer of Wigan, Bolton and Greater Manchester services to Greater Manchester Mental Health
Having considered options for the future of the borough's mental health services, in July 2020, Wigan commissioners formally confirmed their intention to transfer the mental health services contract for Wigan to Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
This means, subject to due diligence processes, the mental health services we deliver in Wigan and the staff who deliver them will transfer to Greater Manchester Mental Health.
The remaining mental health services we deliver in Bolton and Greater Manchester will also transfer to Greater Manchester Mental Health.
These transfers will be aligned to the Mersey Care transition, with all staff and services transferring to their new organisations at the same time.
What this means for patient care
Patient care is our priority and all the organisations involved will be doing everything we can to minimise any change or disruption.
For the time being, you will continue to attend appointments at the same locations and will be treated by the same staff.
We have been working to a transfer date for staff and services of 31 March 2021. However, work on the transaction was paused between March and July 2020 to allow all NHS organisations to focus on the response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are yet to understand whether this will impact the timeline.
