Frequently asked questions

What is the urgent treatment centre?
The aim of urgent treatment centres is to improve access to urgent care by having a range of services available in one place that are able to respond to urgent physical and mental health needs.

In Wigan, we are working with other local health and care organisations and services to ensure the Wigan Urgent Treatment Centre meets the needs of our local population and improves patient experience by offering access to the right service at the right time.

As well as support for urgent and emergency mental health needs, the centre will include a minor injuries unit and the GP out of hours service.

Why is the team moving?
The service the Assessment Team offers is what is needed at the urgent treatment centre – emergency and urgent mental health assessment. By moving, the team will be based alongside other urgent care services and can work with them to provide timely support.

The team will continue to provide urgent and emergency mental health assessment for patients who have been referred to the service or have contacted the team directly with an urgent/emergency mental health need.

From Monday 27 January, patients who go to A&E with an urgent / emergency mental health need will be directed to the team in the urgent treatment centre instead of them having to sit in a busy A&E waiting area. (Note: this will only happen when there is not also a physical health need that needs treatment.)

Why is the team changing its name?
The role of the assessment team is changing slightly to focus on urgent and emergency mental health needs; the change of name aims to reflect the purpose of the team.

Why is the phone number changing?
Unfortunately, there are technical issues that mean we are unable to transfer the existing telephone number when we move. The new number 01942 636 395 will be in use from Monday 27 January.

When the number changes, an answering machine message will be in place on the old number providing callers with the new contact details for the service.
